Master's Degree Programme in Primary School Teaching Profession
The Master’s degree programme in Primary School Teaching, with its focus on the education and upbringing of 5- to 12-year-olds, provides you with the ideal preparation for a career as a primary school teacher. The interdisciplinary approach aims to deepen the skills acquired during the Bachelor’s programme in the fields of educational sciences, subject-specific knowledge and subject-specific teaching methods, whilst striking a balance between theory and practical school experience.
By gaining additional, in-depth knowledge of education in the context of support, development, interculturalism and digitalisation, you will obtain the recognised qualification to work as a competent teacher in everyday school life. You will spend the second half of your studies undertaking a teaching placement at a centre for teacher training and professional development.

Entry requirements
- A university degree or a qualification of at least equivalent standing, comprising modules in two subject areas and their respective teaching methodologies (subjects), in educational sciences and in practical school-based studies. One of the subjects studied must be German or Mathematics. The degree programme must comprise a minimum of 180 CP or have a standard duration of at least three years.
- Evidence of academic achievement in the following areas:
- In each of the two academic disciplines/subject-specific teaching methods (subjects): 35 CP
- Practical school studies: 6 CP
- Educational sciences: 30 CP
- Specific entry requirements apply for the ‘European Teaching’ specialisation.
Admission restrictions
Admission to the Master’s degree programme in Primary School Teacher Training is subject to a quota (numerus clausus). An admissions process is held to determine who is accepted. Full details can be found on the application page for this programme.
Learning objectives and skills
The degree programme focuses on the education and upbringing of children aged 5 to 12, with particular emphasis on primary education and early learning.
Course structure
The degree programme, comprising 120 credit points (CP), is organised on a modular basis and divided into the following areas of study:

Subjects and specialisms
In addition to the compulsory educational sciences modules, you will study a total of two subjects. You will have already completed the core subject (German or Mathematics) during your Bachelor’s degree. You will continue to study the subject you specialised in (German or Mathematics) at Master’s level, as well as your second subject.

What happens after you finish your degree?
With the Master’s degree in Primary School Teaching (M.Ed.), you will be qualified to complete the full teacher training programme, enabling you to subsequently teach at a state primary school.
