Profile

As a university specialising in educational science with the right to award doctoral degrees and habilitation qualifications, we teach and conduct research into educational processes both within and outside schools. We have established three areas of specialisation as strategic priorities in our structure and development plan. The researchers at our university work in these areas both across disciplines and institutions and in collaboration with external partners.

The teaching and learning laboratories play a special role as an interface between academia and practice. There, our students acquire key educational science skills for their future careers, whilst, conversely, teachers and school classes benefit from new educational concepts.

    Education in a democratic society

    Our ‘Education in a Democratic Society’ programme brings together and initiates projects that adopt an interdisciplinary approach to the current challenges facing democratic society and explore the potential of education and upbringing to foster participation, tolerance and solidarity. The programme thus serves as a communication platform and hub.

  • Educational processes in the digital world

    The ongoing digitalisation requires a transformation of the organisational framework, in which digital innovations are integrated into various stages of the teaching and learning processes. To support these efforts, our university is currently running projects that focus on students’ digital skills and the further development of digital examination formats.

  • STEM in a culture of sustainability

    The aim of this specialist area is to bring together teaching and research activities in the STEM subjects – mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology – with a focus on sustainability. In this way, we help to shed light on the complex challenges and questions of our time from various perspectives, drawing on our expertise in subject didactics and educational science.

Teaching and Learning Laboratories

Within the profile areas, research is conducted in an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary manner in collaboration with national and international partners. The findings are incorporated into our teaching and also into our continuing professional development programmes. The teaching and learning laboratories, which form an integral part of each specialisation area, are of particular importance. At these out-of-school learning venues for children and young people, we test and evaluate new educational programmes and teaching concepts.
