Subject: Biology
We ensure that our students are equipped, at both levels, to plan and deliver up-to-date and modern biology lessons, drawing on fundamental biological principles, theories of subject-specific pedagogy and the latest research findings. The focus is always on integrating theory with practice, in line with the approach of teacher training colleges.
Our academic focus is on the fields of organismic zoology, organismic botany, biodiversity, human biology (anatomy), hydrology, ecology and evolution.
Subject-specific pedagogy, in turn, focuses on the areas of school garden development (ecological teaching and learning garden), Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), authentic encounters with nature (outdoor teaching and learning laboratory) and digital media.
The aim of the training programme for you, as a future biology teacher, is to equip you with the necessary subject-specific and pedagogical skills so that you are well prepared to move on to the second phase of teacher training. This is not about developing teaching routines or learning how schools function as institutions. That is what the teaching practice placement is for.
The Institute for Biology and School Garden Development is responsible for the subject, course content and modules.
Possible degree programmes
You can study biology as part of any teacher training programme, including the European Teacher Training specialisation or as an additional subject. In primary schools, biology is taught as part of general studies; in lower secondary schools, it is taught as a stand-alone subject.
