Subject: English

In linguistics, the focus is on research into language (acquisition) based on language use, with particular attention paid to individual and societal multilingualism, Global Englishes, critical language awareness, and anti-racist and decolonial perspectives.

The literature and cultural studies components emphasise the diverse global contexts of Anglophone literatures and cultures and introduce models and methods for analysing cultural texts (ranging from poetry to television series). Among other things, the programme focuses on the significance of colonial and postcolonial developments for cultural production and social change, as well as the challenges of decolonial thinking and writing.

In the subject-specific pedagogy module, issues relating to the teaching of language, literature and culture are discussed and reflected upon in a practice-oriented manner. It guides students through a degree programme with a high practical component, the structure of which provides opportunities to gain teaching experience at an early stage and to reflect on one’s own practical actions from a pedagogical perspective.

You can study English as a subject in all teacher training programmes, including the European Teacher Training specialisation or as a supplementary subject. 

We, the student representatives for the subject, support English students, organise events for them and foster dialogue between lecturers and students.
