Subject: Catholic Theology/Religious Education
The degree programme in Catholic Theology prepares you to acquire and deepen profession-specific theological and religious education skills, and to apply these effectively in your future fields of work. The aim is to find a cognitively and existentially responsible response to the possibility and reality of faith in God, so that, on this basis, you can support the religious development of children, young people and adults and guide them towards forming reflective judgements within the context of a society characterised by ideological pluralism.
The range of courses on offer is fundamentally based on the traditional disciplines of theology:
- Biblical Theology
- Historical Theology
- Systematic Theology
- Practical Theology
In addition, the programme reflects upon and discusses the conditions that enable education to open people’s minds to the diversity of religious reality and to find ways of communicating theological content. Findings from developmental psychology, the sociology of religion, the study of religion and educational theory, for example, contribute to this.
Academic support
Students of Catholic theology who wish to teach religious education after completing their studies require a church teaching licence (missio canonica), which they can apply for at the archiepiscopal ordinariate once they have graduated. One of the requirements for being granted the missio canonica is participation in the Church’s academic support programme. This is a requirement set by the Church for prospective religious education teachers, which is independent of the Catholic theology degree programme at the University of Education.
