Subject: Islamic Theology/Religious Education
The degree programme in Islamic Theology/Religious Education offers excellent opportunities to engage with Islam both academically and from a faith-based perspective, and to reflect on it in the context of teaching and learning processes.
Students acquire theological and religious education skills, as well as the qualification required to embark on a career as a state-employed teacher, which opens up the prospect of a fulfilling professional life.
Career prospects
Our main remit is to train teachers for Islamic religious education. As a subject offered in combination with other teacher training programmes, we provide the opportunity for students to engage in-depth with their own religion whilst pursuing their career aspirations to become teachers.
In Baden-Württemberg, given the current shortage of teachers for Islamic religious education, there is expected to be high demand and excellent career prospects. However, graduates are also equipped to pursue further studies and work in any field relating to Islam and involving Muslims.
Course content
Alongside the content of Islamic theology, our teaching programme focuses on skills in religious education and the pedagogy of religion. In order to meet the demands of school practice as effectively as possible, the Institute for Islamic Theology/Religious Education is particularly committed to addressing the challenges facing Islam in the contemporary German context, whilst taking into account the lived experiences of Muslim pupils. Our range of seminars includes, amongst other things, courses on:

- The biography of the Prophet (Sira)
- Islamic anthropology and ethics
- Islamic philosophy and mysticism
- Modern Islamic history
- Muslims in Germany

Learning objectives
Upon successful completion of your degree, you will be able to:
- Teach faith-based Islamic religious education.
- Support pupils in their quest for truth.
- Promote interfaith learning.
- Reflect on the content of primary Islamic sources independently, as well as from a pedagogical and didactic perspective.
- Break down teaching content into basic elements and present it in a skills-based manner.
- Highlight different positions and explanatory models regarding religious issues.
- Distinguish between different interpretations and positions within Islamic theology.
- Explain the genesis and exegesis of primary Islamic sources, including their historical impact.
- Interpret religion in the light of its historical and cultural context and relate it to pupils’ lived experiences.
- Work in a critical, reflective and scholarly manner.
