Years 1 to 4 or 5 to 10
Music permeates our lives; it is ever-present. Music lessons are a space where music is played, where making music together and reflecting on music-related perception, feeling and understanding become the focus of intersubjective communication. In this context, we learn ‘not only’ about music, but also through music. More broadly, it is also about learning to understand – to understand the specific nature of music as an art form, to recognise our own ways of engaging with it, and to develop empathy, that is, an understanding of one another.
Just as music is diverse, so too can the personal diversity of the people interacting with one another be experienced in a deeply enriching way during music lessons. By aiming not only at the acquisition of practical musical skills but also at the development of aesthetic judgement, a reasoned and conscious engagement with music, and the independent participation of young people in cultural life, music education makes an indispensable contribution to general education.
To study with us, you do not need to have any previous music school experience and can be active in any musical genre (classical, hip-hop, rock, jazz, etc.).
Studying
You can study music as a subject in almost all degree programmes leading to a teaching qualification for primary school (Years 1 to 4) and lower secondary school (Years 5 to 10). Music is also part of the Bachelor’s degree programme in Early Years Education. We have established a specific admissions procedure for the Music subject within teacher training. As part of this, you will need to write and submit a personal statement when applying for a place on the programme. Departmental Council

The Music Department Student Council (FaVe) acts as a link between students on the one hand and lecturers on the other. If you have any questions or issues relating to your studies, please feel free to contact the FaVe representatives at any time. The FaVe also organises the annual Christmas party and has the opportunity to participate as student representatives in departmental meetings and the regional student council meeting.
