CoCreate COIL

Since 2022, Dr Annette Deschner-Brendel (PHKA) and Dr Michiko Weinmann (Deakin University) have been collaborating transnationally as part of the CoCreate COIL programme and have developed the original CUSHA COIL and CLIL COIL.

CoCreate COIL creates learning spaces in which different languages, as well as cultural and disciplinary perspectives, engage in dialogue and interact. In doing so, we pursue several objectives:

• To contribute to the internationalisation of teacher training and higher education,
• to promote transdisciplinary collaboration,
• to put multilingualism into practice,
• to make bodies of knowledge in different languages accessible,
• to facilitate transnational collaboration across different time zones and academic terms through asynchronous formats, and
• share, further develop and jointly maintain knowledge, experience and resources.

The CoCreate COIL team is jointly developing the following seminars for international, digital learning environments.

Students come together in creatively and interactively designed virtual spaces – ranging from a welcome dinner and a ‘language biography’ gallery to the ‘Culture Garden’, where they can exchange ideas. CUSHA COIL promotes critical reflection, international collaboration and innovative digital teaching methods. The programme equips trainee teachers to deal with cultural and linguistic diversity and invites other higher education institutions to collaborate.

CoCreate COIL sees itself as a network that develops horizontally, in a multi-layered way and in a variety of directions. New connections arise organically – through shared interests, projects, languages and perspectives. Connections do not arise from a top-down approach, but through relationships, ideas and shared concerns. At the same time, the network is supported by a curatorial structure that ensures openness does not lead to arbitrariness and that the fundamental principles of CoCreate COIL are upheld.

The Core Team supports the network’s growth and is responsible for ensuring that hubs, projects and partnerships can develop in a variety of directions. In doing so, sustainable and fair collaboration is key, alongside the network’s thematic focus. The Core Team selects the team members and oversees the onboarding process.

The CoCreate COIL team comprises lecturers who work together to develop and teach the individual COIL seminars offered by CoCreate COIL. The list is in order of when they joined.
