Master's Degree Programme in Cultural Education

On the Master’s programme in Cultural Mediation (KULT), we develop practice-oriented strategies for critical cultural mediation. Drawing on cultural studies and aesthetic theories, we engage with current socio-political discourses, such as those on cultural participation, diversity and engagement. Working in small teams, students design and trial research and outreach projects for partner cultural organisations, becoming an integral part of the diverse cultural sector.

For us, cultural outreach takes place everywhere: in seminar rooms and studios, in museums, theatres and concert venues, in socio-cultural centres and also at the Cultural Office.

What happens after you finish your degree?

Our graduates work in cultural institutions and cultural administration bodies, as cultural educators at museums and theatres, in youth art schools and youth centres, or in cultural associations within the independent arts scene.

As a culture and events manager at a retirement home, I organise talks, readings, film screenings and chamber music concerts. The view of culture as a source of meaning and a stimulating force in the lives of older people is a central theme of the Master’s programme.

Artistic education is often neglected in schools. As the director of the youth art school, I design creative workshops for children and young people. Discovering and developing my own creative potential was an important part of my Master’s degree.

My responsibilities as Managing Director of Stiftsmusik Stuttgart range from A for ‘acquiring’ artists and ensembles to Z for ‘target audience analysis’. My Master’s degree has made me more aware of the need to focus on our audience and those who do not attend our events.

Learning outcomes and skills

The Master’s programme in Cultural Mediation equips you to analyse cultural education work in relation to current educational challenges and opportunities (such as equitable participation, diversity, digitalisation and sustainability) and to develop concepts for the design and delivery of educational programmes. Cultural Mediation and Cultural Education, as heterogeneous fields of practice and research, are understood here in both socio-political and cultural-educational terms.

As part of the Master’s programme, you will broaden your personal cultural experiences in both receptive and productive terms and refine your cultural and artistic judgement. You will learn to reflect upon and analyse cultural content and artistic processes within their complex contexts, as well as to devise, organise and publicise creative concepts and formats for different social groups. In doing so, you will acquire both aesthetic and creative as well as pedagogical and didactic skills. At the same time, you will acquire specialist expertise in educational science, enabling you to approach cultural educational processes from a research-oriented perspective. This is a prerequisite for a potential subsequent PhD, for which the Master’s programme qualifies you.

Entry requirements

A university degree or at least an equivalent qualification in one of the following fields of study or a related subject area: Education and Educational Sciences (including, amongst others, Social Work/Social Pedagogy, Special Needs Education, Vocational Education, Teacher Training Programmes, Early Childhood Education), Social Sciences (including Sociology, Political Science, History, Geography), Linguistics and Literature (including German Studies, English Studies, Romance Studies, Applied Linguistics, Translation Studies), Psychology, Media Studies, Cultural Studies, Religious Studies, Theology, Philosophy, Law and Public Administration, International and Intercultural Management, Health Sciences.

The degree programme on which the qualification is based must comprise a minimum of 180 credit points (CP) or have a standard duration of at least three years.
